Get back on your feet: stretches for knee pain

Don’t follow the yellow brick road with a click in your knees.

The thing about knee pain is that it truly can affect you at any time during your life. When you are young, your knee can be sore from sports injury or tightness from prolonged sitting. As you age, knee pain can trouble you because of extended wear and tear on the joint. The good news is that pain in your knee doesn’t need to be something you must put up with. In fact, improving your mobility with regular stretching and exercise really helps reduce your risk of discomfort.

Why is my knee hurting?

Knee pain is often caused by weakness or vulnerability  in your lower limbs – hips, glutes, ankles, feet and even your lower back. After all, the muscles and tendons of these body parts are all connected. When one is weak, it compromises the whole operation (so to speak).

Why is knee pain common?

Knee pain is one of the more common complaints we treat. It can be caused by a sports injury or accident; but it also is often due to aging and everyday wear and tear. Yes, the impact of a sedimentary lifestyle strikes again. All that desk sitting, commuter sitting, and couch lounging does slowly weaken your body’s ability to function at its peak. The truth is, the best thing you can do to reduce your risk of knee pain is to build strength in your hips, glutes and lower limbs. And, lose weight! Even carrying one less kilogram can cause a significant decrease in load through your knee joint. If you aren’t sure why your knee is sore, or you’d like a qualified health practitioner -- like your chiropractor -- to help treat your pain and map out a road to recovery, please get in touch to arrange an appointment here.
