How to get ahead of your headaches

Woman with headache treatment

Know your type. Treat it. Then, improve your everyday habits for a headache-free life.

Regular headaches can be debilitating. Whether you wake up with one, or it develops during a day at your desk – headaches are uncomfortable, annoying, and really zap the zest from your day.

But the thing is, you don’t need to suffer through regular headaches. In fact, when you pay attention to when and where your headaches start, you can make changes to help reduce their intensity and frequency. Read on to learn how.

Headache types

Whilst there are hundreds of types of headaches, some of the most common types that you might experience in your everyday life are:

  1. Tension Headaches

o   They feel like: a mild or moderate ache that can come and go

o   They last: a few hours

o   Treatable: yes

2. Migraines

o   They feel like: a pounding or throbbing pain on one side of your head

o   Other symptoms: sensitivity to light and noise, nausea and vomiting

o   They last: a few hours to a couple of days

o   Treatable: yes

3.    Cluster Headaches

o   They feel like: constant severe pain behind one eye

o   They last: a few hours. But they occur in groups (hence their name). You’ll suffer from a sequence, or cluster, of headaches and then they’ll disappear for a while. But they’ll be back.

o   Treatable: yes

4.    Sinus Headaches

o   Feel like: constant ache across your forehead and cheekbones

o   Other symptoms: usually presents alongside other sinus symptoms like a runny nose or fever

o   Treatable: yes

In addition to these, it is also possible to experience chronic daily headaches. However, a proper investigation into the cause of your pain can help you find relief. For personalised advice and treatment, make a time to discuss your pain with one of our experienced chiropractors.

Headache causes

Headaches are often the result of muscular tension, dehydration, stress or illness. However, addressing the cause that creates tension in your neck, shoulders and upper back can help reduce your pain.

A chiropractor can conduct a proper investigation into the cause of your pain. During a chiropractic session, your chiropractor will review your pain symptoms and your lifestyle to get to the root cause of your issue. Often, a few small lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on your overall health. For personalised advice and treatment, make a time to discuss your pain with one of our experienced chiropractors.

Headache treatment

To find immediate relief, try relieving muscular tension by stretching or massaging your neck and shoulders. You can also try a heat pack to help loosen stiff muscles. In addition, remember to sip water, rest and relax if you can.

If you are fed up with being held back by headaches, talk to your chiropractor. Your chiropractor can diagnose why you’re experiencing headaches, treat your symptoms, and guide you towards making improvements to your posture, habits, and technique.

Please seek emergency medical attention immediately if you ever experience an extreme or suddenly severe headache.
